A Bit About Me

Hi, my name is Bilyana and I’m an artist based in Sofia, Bulgaria.

I have a BA in Painting from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia. I'm also on my last semester of getting a Masters in "Visual Communication", also at the NAA.

In the years since I've been working as a freelance artist I've taken part in numerous group shows and I've had two solo exhibitions as well. But the most defining work I've done on my path in the visual arts sphere are my curatorial projects. For me this creative act - the materialization of an idea, bringing all the different elements together to form a multi-faceted experience for the audience has been eye-opening. In this practice I'm defining for myself what is the place of contemporary art in the life of society today. This question of connection is something I'm deeply curious about.

Exponautes

A multi-genre exhibition in which contemporary art and ecology intertwine in an experimental dialogue. With it, we invite the audience to explore the different faces of our belonging to an all-encompassing living network, whose fate is irrevocably intertwined with that of man. Presenting the complex topic of ecology in the form of contemporary visual art, "Exhibits" creates new forms of cultural and social dialogue.
Through multimedia installations and interactive experiences, our artists create a liminal space in which the audience will explore their interaction with the surrounding nature.

The project was realised with the financial support of Sofia Municipality, Culture division

Cabinet of Curiosities

An interactive and immersive experience, inspired by the cabinets of curiosities, circa XV- XVI century. A collaboration between contemporary visual artists, which I curated and organized.

The project was funded by The National Culture Fund and we partnered with the National Museum of Natural History for a series of interviews between scientists and artists

Steps with color

An art therapy workshop I organized, aimed at providing a space for the artistic expression of kids with special educational needs. Having it's start with the support of the Center "S-Ivvena" in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, this project could expand to include more events spread throughout the country. "Steps with color" is being realized with the financial support of the grant programme Artistic Stipend of the National Culture Fund.

Flight in the Salt

An artistic collaboration, which I co-organized, aimed at raising awareness about the Atanasovsko lake, near the city of Burgas, part of Natura 2000. The project was funded by The National Culture Fund and our partners were the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation, as well as the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.
The project included a few events in two cities - Burgas and Sofia, showcasing the artistic work of me and my team, inspired by the salt lagoon.
